A kitchen garden weekend / un weekend du potager

I’ve spent this weekend at a wonderful Kitchen Gardeners International event organised by Kate from the Vegetable Vagabond blog and Ian of Kitchen Garden in France.  Roger Doiron of Kitchen Garden International was here too and we’ve visited markets at Villereal and Issegeac, producers of prunes, honey and flour, tasted wine, wandered around Ian and Kate’s own garden while they explained their plans for it, and visited their neighbours’ fantastically productive gardens, eating wonderful food and drinking great wine.  All this, and the chance to discuss gardening and food with gardeners from three different continents.  I’ll write more about what we’ve been doing later, and I’ll post some of the many photos I’ve taken, but for now I’ll just post this photo of a market stall run by a young couple who are starting an organic farm and who invited us all to visit and enjoy barbecue lunch at Laspissottes.

Dry / Sec

Usually, after a dry summer, we have rain here at the beginning of September. This year we’re still waiting. The garden needs it. / Normalement, après un été sec, il pleut au début de septembre. Cette année on l’attend toujours. Le jardin en a besoin.

Will it rain soon? Maybe not. Clouds come over from time to time, but no rain falls. / Pleuvra-t-il bientôt? Peut-être non. Les nuages passent au-dessus de nous de temps en temps, mais la pluie ne tombe pas.

The plane trees / Les platanes

Day after day we’ve heard the chainsaws and seen the lorries taking away the felled, healthy trees. There is an emptiness where they’ve been cut down which I can’t bear to photograph yet. Everyone we talk to is upset about it.

Jour après jour on a entendu les tronçonneuses et on a vu les camions en emportant les arbres sains abattus. Il y a un vide à coté de la route qui je ne peux pas photographier encore. Tout le monde dit que ça les fait mal.

We think the chainsaws disturbed a hive of bees, as a swarm passed frighteningly close over us in the garden the other day. It‘s not the usual time of year for swarming. / Nous pensons que les tronçonneuses ont troublé une ruche d’abeilles, parce que un essaim sont passé très proche au-dessus de nous au jardin. Ce n’est pas la saison pour essaimer.

We’ve found that shield beetles are attacking our tomatoes. There doesn’t seem to be an effective organic way to get rid of them. We are starting to pick some good tomatoes again, though, and luckily the flowers in the garden are a more cheerful sight. / Nous avons trouvé que les punaises attaquent les tomates et il semble qu’il n y a pas une façon biologique de les tuer. On commence à ramasser encore des bonnes tomates, et heureusement, les fleurs au jardin sont plus joyeux à voir.

Autumn fruits / Les fruits d’automne

The olives are growing well and we have fruit on both our small trees this year.

Les olives poussent bien et il y a des fruits sur les deux arbres cette année.

The aubergine plants have flowers on them and some nice aubergines too. / Les aubergines fleurissent et il y a des bonnes aubergines aussi.

We’ve sown carrots and radishes in the same row as they are supposed to do well together. The radishes are just emerging from the straw we’ve put down to conserve water. / Nous avons semé des carrottes et des radis ensemble parce qu’ils poussent bien ensemble. Les radis commencent à pousser entre les morceaux de paille que nous avons mis pour conserver l'eau.

Figs / Les figues

A friend said that we could have the figs from her trees and yesterday we picked 6.5 kilos of green figs and 2 kilos of black figs. / Une amie nous a dit que nous pouvons ramasser les figues de ses arbres et hier on a ramasser 6,5 kilos de figues vertes et 2 kilos de figues noir.

We’ve made jam and we’ve bottled some in syrup using the recipe on gintoino’s blog, although ours don’t look as nice as his! / Nous avons fait de la confiture et nous en avons conservé quelques unes dans le sirop en suivant la recette sur le blog de gintoino.

And a salad of goats’ cheese, cured ham and figs / Et une salade de fromage de chèvre, jambon cru et figues

I made a salad with a dressing made from a teaspoonful of honey, 2 teaspoonfuls of Banyuls vinegar (balsamic vinegar would work too), salt, pepper and olive oil. It would make a good first course. We at it as a light lunch. The goats’ cheese, ham and figs were all strong flavours which went very well together.

J’ai preparé une salade avec un assaisonnement de miel, vinaigre de Banyuls, sel, poivre et huile d’olive. Elle serait bien comme une entrée. Nous l’avons mangée pour un déjeuner léger. Le fromage, le jambon et les figues ont des bons saveurs qui sont très biens ensemble.

September days / Les jours de septembre

The nights are getting cooler and the days shorter even though it is still hot during the day – up to 30 degrees C and we still haven’t had any rain! We’ve given up hope for the tomatoes as they just will not seem to ripen – maybe we can make something with green tomatoes. A couple of years ago Lo Jardinièr made green tomato jam which went very well with goats’ cheese.

It upsets me to spend too much time in the garden at the moment with the sound of the chainsaws felling the plane trees down the hill on the main road.

Les nuits deviennent plus fraiches et les jours plus courts, mème si il fait chaud encore pendant la journée – 30 dégrées C et il n’a pas plu. Les tomates ne mûrissent pas, mais peut-être on peut faire quelque chose des tomates vertes. Il y a deux ans Lo Jardinièr a fait de la confiture de tomates vertes qui accompagnait très bien le fromage de chèvre.

Ca me peine passer trop de temps au jardin en ce moment, en entendand le bruit des tranconneuses qui abbatent les platanes au fond de la colline.

Pesto

This morning I cut the basil and ground the leaves with olive oil, pine nuts and grated parmesan cheese to make pesto which we’ll eat with pasta. I’ve frozen some of the chopped leaves so that we can make pesto in the winter.

Ce matin j’ai aceuilli le basilic et j’ai moulu les feuilles avec de l’huile d’olive, des pignons de pin et du fromage parmesan pour faire le pesto pour accompagner les pâtes. J’ai congelé des feuilles hachées afin qu’on puisse faire du pesto en hiver.

Radicchio

We had one radicchio plant which didn’t get eaten by the snails and we ate some of it yesterday with salmon and courgette rice paper parcels and some today in a salad with the last cucumber of the summer.

On avait un plant de radicchio que les escargots n’avaient pas mangé. Nous l’avons mangé hier avec des nems de saumon et de courgette et aujourd’hui dans une salade avec le dernier concombre de l’été.

And the vendange goes on / et la vendange continue

All around the village there are grape-picking machines in the vineyards and tractors pulling trailers full of grapes back to the domaines and the caves cooperatives. Winemakers are bottling last year’s wine to make room in the vats for this year’s new grapes. It’s an important time of year here.

Autour du village il y a des machines qui ramassent les raisins et des tracteurs qui tirent des remorques pleins de raisins aux domaines et aux caves cooperatives. Les vignerons misent en bouteilles le vin de l’année dernière pour faire de la place dans les cuves pour les raisin de cette année. C’est un moment très important ici.

Update on the plane trees / Les platanes – mise à jour

At a meeting yesterday evening the mayor presented the revised plan for the plane trees and it seems that the muncipal council has accepted a compromise. All the remaining plane trees on one side of the road will be stay. It’s not ideal, but it’s the best we can hope for. What a pity this wasn’t agreed before some of the trees were needlessly felled.

A une réunion publique hier soir le maire a presenté le nouveau projet et il semble que le conseil municipal ont trouvé un compromis. Tous les platanes qui y restent à un coté de la route resteront. Ce n'est pas idéal mais c'est mieux que le projet précédent. C'est dommage que quelques arbres sont déja detruits inutilement.

Oysters / les huitres

Today we bought oysters from the van from Bouzigues and ate them for lunch in the garden, simply with lemon.

Aujourd’hui on a acheté des huitres du producteur de Bouzigues, pour manger au jardin, accompagnées tout simplement de citron.

We’ve started sowing the autumn crops, even though we’ve had no rain yet. We sowed lettuce – Rougette de Montpellier, a good autumn and winter variety – Cavalo Nero kale and turnips.

Carbon footprints / Empreintes de carbon

There’s a campaign in the UK and the rest of the world for everyone to reduce their carbon footprint by 10 per cent by 2010. It something small which we can all do for the future of the planet, even though I believe that politicians have to take a much bigger role in this.

Il y a une campagne pour la réduction d’émissions de carbon de tout le monde par 10 pour cent avant 2010. C’est quelque chose que tout le monde peut faire pour l’avenir de la planète, mème si les politiciens doivent prendre un role plus important.

I used the calculator on the website Carbon footprint to calculate our footprint and found that Lo Jardinièr and I are each responsible for 4.74 tonnes of carbon emissions per year:

House 0.41

Flights 0

Car 1.16

Bus & rail 0.06

Secondary 3.11 (food, entertainment, clothes, etc.)

J’ai calculé sur le site Carbon footprint et j’ai trouvé que chaqu’un de nous deux, Lo Jardinièr et moi, sommes resonsable pour 4.74 tonnes d’émissions de carbon par an. La moyenne pour la France est 6.2, mais il faut réduire ce chiffre pour le monde entière à 2 tonnes pour sauver la planète.

Our problem is that we already lead a comparatively low-carbon life, so that it’s difficult to find ways we can reduce it further. The average for France is 6.20 tonnes, for the UK it is 14 and for all industrialised nations it is 11. We can’t let these figures make us feel complacent, though, since the target – what we must do to save the planet – is 2 tonnes per person.

There are some suggestions for cutting emissions on the Guardian website – here. I’ll be reading through them carefully to see what we can do. / Il y a des suggestions (en anglais) pour réduire les émissions de carbon sur le site du Guardian – ici.

While I’ve been writing this it has started to rain! We hope it will be enough to make a difference to the garden, as we’ve had no proper rain for three months.

Moving on (towards autumn) / On avance (vers l’automne)

Maybe it’s because our last visitors of the summer have left, or because the nights are cooler and the days not too hot to think about working in the garden, with temperatures down from 37 to 32 degrees, but we’ve started to prepare for autumn.

Peut-être c'est parce que nos derniers visiteurs de l'été sont partis, ou parce que les nuits deviennent moins chaud et on peut penser de travailler un peu dans le jardin - les températures baissent de 37 à 32 dégrees – que nous avons commencé de préparer pour l’automne.

It was time to cut down the sunflowers and save the seeds to use in cooking and for next year’s plants. / C’était le moment pour couper les tournesols pour garder les semences pour cuisiner et pour les plants de l’année prochaine.

Lo Jardinièr began to prepare the ground where they were for sowing Cavalo Nero Kale and lettuces. / Lo Jardinièr a commencé de préparer la terre pour semer le chou frisé Cavalo Nero et les laitues.

Vendange (grape harvest)

The vendange began here a couple of weeks ago. The white grapes are picked first, at night to keep them cool. So every night at this time of year there is the constant sound of tractors going out to the vineyards in the early hours of the morning. Now the red grapes are starting to be ready for picking.

La vendange a commencé ici il y a deux semaines. Les raisins blancs d’abord, dans la nuit pour les garder frais. Maintenant les raisins rouges sont prêts.

Our grapes are ripe too. They’re bigger and sweeter than last year, but still quite small because the vine is young. / Nos raisins sont mûrs aussi. Ils sont plus gros et plus doux que l'année dernière, mais ils sont toujours assez petits parce que la vigne et jeune.

It’s good to pick the grapes growing above your table and eat them straight from the vine.

C’est bon ramasser les raisins qui poussent au-dessus de la table et les manger tout de suite.

Peppers / les poivrons

We haven’t had many red peppers this year – as soon as they begin to ripen the snails eat them. We’ve had some good green peppers though and yesterday we grilled a perfect red one on the barbecue and ate it with goats’ cheese. Today we added two green peppers to a chicken paella.
