Market day / Le jour du marché

As usual we went to the market this morning.  This is what we bought - and it's not all to eat today, of course!  / Comme d'habitude on est allé au marché ce matin.  On a acheté:

 

Sheeps' cheese from Lacaune, strawberries from Fouzilhon, sausage from Lacaune, mackerel from Valras-plage, morcillas from Spain, onions, aubergines, lemons, .  /  Fromage de brebis de Lacaune, des fraises de Fouzilhon, la saucisse fraiche de Lacaune, des mackeraux de Valras-plage, morcillas de l'Espagne, ognions, aubergines, citrons.

Cherries

We've picked cherries from the tree in the garden of some friends - they've gone away and told us we can pick them.  For the second year running this tree has a huge crop.  We picked about 10 kilos and hardly touched the total.  I've bottled some in Armagnac - 6 jars which should be ready to eat in a few months' time.  Here they are served after the dessert with the coffee.  Lo Jardinièr has made jam.  And we've eaten them fresh, of course.

Nous avons ramasser les cerises dans le jardin de nos amis qui sont partis.  J'ai mis quelques uns à l'Armagnac - 6 bocaux qui seront prêts à manger dans quelques mois.  Lo Jardinièr a fait de la confiture.  Et nous les avons mangé fraiches.

The weather has turned dry, sunny and hot so we're having to water the garden every day. Luckily there is still plenty of water in the stream. / Il fait chaud donc on doit arroser le jardin chaque jour.  Heureusement il y a beaucoup d'eau dans le ruisseau.

Another way of cooking artichokes / Une autre façon de cuire les artichauts

The barbecue was alight at lunchtime today to cook the mackerel, so I tried cooking the artichokes on it.  I took off most of the outer leaves and cut them in half, brushed them with olive oil and put them on the grill with some slices of aubergine.  They tasted very good.  / J'ai essayé de cuire des artichauts sur la grillade.  J'ai enlevé la plupart des feuilles externes et je les ai coupé en deux.  J'ai mis de l'huile d'olive et je les ai mis sur la grillade avec des tranches d'aubergine.  Le gout était très bon.

Beans and more beans and rain / Les haricots et encore d'haricots et la pluie

It's lucky that we finished planting out our tomatoes, peppers and aubergines at the beginning of this week.  Since then we have had unusually cold wet weather and haven't been able to do much work in the garden.  We have been able to pick broad beans and peas, though.  More than we can possibly eat.  We've given them away, frozen them and eaten them every day.

Heureusement nous avons planté les tomates, les poivrons et les aubergines au commencement de cette semaine.  Depuis lundi il a fait froid et il a plu.  Nous n'avons pas pu jardiner.  Mais nous avons ramassé les fèves et les pois.  Plus qu'on peut manger.  Nous les avons donnés à nos amis, nous les avons congelés, et nous les avons mangés tous les jours.

The broad beans have done really well this year.  Yesterday we picked nearly 4 kilos.  We've cooked them with artichokes (a favourite recipe of mine), we've cooked them and eaten them with olive oil and garlic, we've frozen some and we're making a salad of beans, potatoes (from the garden), sweet onions and parsley to take on a picnic in a vineyard with our Occitan group tomorrow.

Hier on a ramassé presque 4 kilos de fèves.  Ils ont poussé très bien cette année.  Nous les avons cuits avec les artichauts, nous les avons mangés à l'ail et à l'huile d'olive, et on fera une salade des fèves, des pommes de terre (du jardin), de l'oignon doux et du persil pour une picque-nicque dans les vignes avec le Cercle occitan demain.

Today it was good to go to the garden in the sun and find that the irises were still in flower, the vines are about to flower, the palm tree has a new leaf.

Aujourd'hui c'était bien aller au jardin au soleil pour trouver que les iris fleurissent toujours, les vignes sont sour la pointe de fleurir, le palmier a une nouvelle feuille.

Some of our apricots have fallen in the wind and rain before they are ripe, but I've cooked them with sugar and put them in a pilaf.  They tasted wonderful, although not as good as fresh ripe apricots.

Quelques abricots sont tombés dans le vent et la pluie avant de mûrir.  Je les ai cuits au sucre et je les ai mis dans un pilaf.  Ils ont un gout très bon, mais ils ne sont pas si bon que les abricots mûrs et frais.

There was some rice left over when I'd made the dolmas so we used it to stuff mussels which we ate with tomato sauce.

Il y a resté du riz après que j'ai fait les dolmas.  Donc, j'ai fait des moules farcies qu'on a mangé à la sauce tomate.

These butterflies - up to about 10 at a time - were attracted to the thyme flowers.

Taking shape / Prendre forme

The summer garden is taking shape as we've done a lot of planting during the past week or so.  We've planted out 62 tomato plants (20 Roma, 19 St Pierre, 8 Ananas, 8 Coeur de Boeuf and 7 Yellow pear).  Yes, we know that's probably too many, but the seedlings were too good to throw away!  We've planted out 4 melons, 4 cucumbers, 16 peppers, 3 chilli peppers and 5 aubergines.  Now we only need the sun and a lot of water!

Le jardin d'été prend forme.  On a fait beaucoup de plantation pendant la dernière semaine.  On a planté 62 tomates (20 Roma, 19 St Pierre, 8 Ananas, 8 Coeur de Boeuf et 7 Yellow pear).  Nous savons que c'est probablement trop, mais les plantes ont été trop bons pour jeter!  On a planté 4 melons, 4 concombres, 16 poirvrons, trois piments et 5 aubergines.  On n'a besoin que de soleil et beacoup d'eau!

We added manure and compost to the ground for the peppers and aubergines and made irrigation channels alongside the rows.  Three of the pepper plants and all the aubergines are grafted onto tomato roots.  This makes larger more productive plants.  We've grown grafted aubergines before but this is the first time we've tried the peppers.

On a ajouté de fumier et de compost à la terre pour les poivrons et les aubergines, et on a fait des gouttières d'irrigation près des rangs.  Trois poivrons et tous les aubergines sont des plants greffés sur les racines de tomate.  Ça fait les plants plus grands et plus productifs.  Nous avons cultiver les aubergines greffés l'année dernière, mais c'est la première fois que nous cultivons les poivrons greffés.

In the rest of the garden / dans le reste du jardin

	The cistus are flowering, inspite of the rain today. / Les cistes fleurissent, malgré la pluie aujourd'hui.

The olive trees are about to flower / Les oliviers sont à la pointe de fleurir.

The vine leaves are growing - nearly time to make dolmas! / Les feuilles de vigne poussent - c'est presque le temps pour faire les dolmas!

We're picking lots of broad beans - the longest was 31 cm.

And this evening we're going to eat our first potatoes of the year. / Et ce soir on mangera les premières pommes de terre de l'an.

Luckily the stream from the Resclauze spring is running well, so there is plenty of water for all our plants.  /  Heureusement le ruisseau de la Resclauze coule bien, donc il y a assez de l'eau pour tous les plants.

Planting melons and cucumbers / Planter les melons et les concombres

We try to grow as much from seed as possible and this year we've grown almost all of our 64 tomato plants from seed, some from our own saved seed. But we do buy some plants. This year we shall have to buy pepper plants. We sowed several different varieties in March and they germinated well, but the plants haven't grown well. All the other gardeners we talk to in Gabian say their plants are the same. It's been a cold spring.

Ce printemps il a fait froid ici et les poivrons ne poussent pas bien, ni dans notre jardin ni dans les jardins des autres à Gabian. Nous en devrons acheter.

This year, as usual, we've also bought Charentais melon and cucumber plants from a local producer, in the market in Gabian. The plants come from Fouzilhon, about 3 kilometres from here, so I don't mind buying these. The same stall also sells other produce from the same farm: strawberries, chick peas, wine, and melons later in the summer.

Cette année, comme d'habitude, on a acheté aussi des plantes de melon Charantais et de concombre d'un producteur de Fouzilhon (3 kilometres d'ici) qui vient au marché à Gabian. Il vend aussi les fraises, les pois chiches, le vin, et plutard les melons.

Melons and cucumbers need a lot of water so we have put some effort into preparing the ground for them. In January we dug in some goat manure. Now Lo Jardinièr has made a wide bed for the melons, surrounded by a bank of earth so that it can be flooded.

Les melons et les concombres ont besoin de beaucoup d'eau, donc nous avons fait du travail en préparant la terre. En janvier on a mis du fumier de chèvre. Aujourd'hui Lo Jardinièr a fait une parterre large entourée d'un mur de terre afin qu'on puisse l'inonder.

The plants are protect from snails by collars made of plastic water bottles. / Les plantes sont protégées des escargots par des colliers en plastique.

For the cucumbers we have made three channels where we will put drip-hoses for watering. Between the three channels there are two rows for the cucumbers, which will be supported by frames made from canes and wires. We'll have eight plants - four we've bought and four we've grown from seed. The latter are not quite ready to go out yet.

Pour les concombres on a fait trois gouttières où on va mettre des tuyaus pour arroser. Entre les gouttières il y a deux rangs où des cannes et des fils soutiendront les plantes. Il y aura 8 plantes.

Let's just hope the snails don't eat them! / On éspère que les escargots ne les mangeront pas!

Gardening generations / Les générations du jardin

One of the great pleasures of our recent visit to Wales was helping our daughter, La Jardiniera, to start her first garden in her new home.  She's been gardening for a while with friends and in our garden here but now she has her own small plot.  It's so good to see a new generation of gardeners who want to grow their own food. 

Un des plus grand plaisirs de notre séjour au Pays de Galles est d'aider notre fille à commencer son jardin chez elle.  C'est bon voir une nouvelle génération qui veulent cultiver la nourriture.

Lo Jardinièr helped clear a bed for herbs and later there will be space for vegetables near the bay tree. / Lo Jardinièr a nettoyé une parterre pour les herbes et plutard il y aura une parterre pour les légumes près du laurier.

Languedoc light / La lumière du Languedoc

Since I've been back from our trip to Wales I've noticed more than I usually do how wonderful the light is here.  Even though the sun shone while we were in Wales, the light seems so much brighter and clearer here - a Mediterranean light.  One that has been appreciated by artists.  We're not far from Collioure where Matisse and Derain painted in the early years of the 20th century and began a new movement called Fauvism (from the French fauves, wild beasts).  We've noticed too how the quality of the light changes around Carcassonne if you're travelling from west to east - suddenly the haze lifts and everything looks sharp and clear.

Depuis mon retour du Pays de Galles j'ai remarqué plus que d'habitude la lumière languedocienne.  La lumière ici est beaucoup plus clair que celle du Pay de Galles - une lumière mediterranéenne.  Nous ne sommes loin de Collioure où les artistes Matisse et Derain ont peint au debut du 20ème siècle et où ils ont fondé le mouvement qui s'appèle le Fauvisme.  Nous aussi, on a remarqué que la qualité de la lumière change vers Carcassonne quand on voyage de l'ouest à l'est - tout à coup la brume se lève et tout semble clair.

Mussels for lunch / Les moules pour le déjeuner

We bought mussels from the van from Bouzigues and cooked them over a wood fire at the garden with lardons (bacon pieces) and thyme, then garnished them with chopped savory and garlic and a squeeze of lemon.  A delicious lunch!

On a acheté des moules du producteur de Bouzigues et on les a cuites au lardons et au thym sur un feu de bois au jardin.  Garnies de l'ail haché et de sariette et un peu de jus de citron, elles on fait un déjeuner delicieux!

We worked too.  We planted some of our tomato plants - the Yellow Pear which we bought.  We'll plant the others tomorrow.  And we made sure that the courgette plants will get watered by making a channel through the bed.

Our first cistus flower came out.  They are already flowering in the garrigue and this is later than last year in the garden.  Each flower lasts only one day and this one fell quickly because it was windy.  There'll be more tomorrow.

May Day / Le Premier Mai

On our first morning back from our trip to Wales it seems as though we've woken up to the first day of summer. We had a very good holiday and ate excellent food - Japanese, Turkish and our own family Mediterranean mix of delicious things, but it's wonderful to be back home again. There was rain while we were away so the garden looks very green and bright. One of our neighbours had kept an eye on it for us and thrown out the snails who'd found their way into the cold frame.

Ce matin, le premier après notre retour du Pays de Galles, est comme le premier jour de l'été. Il a plu pendant la dernière semaine et le jardin est vert et clair.

We found a huge crop of mangetout peas and broad beans / on a trouvé beaucoup de pois mangetout et fèves . . .

I thought that this one was a moth at first. Now I think it's a butterfly but I still can't identify it. Please leave a comment if you have any idea what it might be.

The pepper plants are still growing very slowly and I think we may have to buy plants but the tomato plants are ready to be planted out so we have a busy weekend ahead!
